Space and Astronomy at Leicester High School
Leicester, through the University, National Space Centre and the new Space Park, has a long tradition of being involved in the field of Astronomy and Space.
Leicester High students follow in this tradition and the Year 8 have just completed a study into the History of Astronomy.
This topic is often presented as male and euro-centric, with main players such as Copernicus, Galileo and Newton.
However, our Leicester High students looked further afield and discovered the contributions of Benjamin Banneker, Annie Cannon, Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi and Ibn al-Haytham, amongst others, showing the great contributions made by female, Arabic and Chinese astronomers.
We have a section on the Tutor Group notices, shown to all students, on ‘What to see in the night sky’. This is updated every month and informs our students what is interesting to observe. Often a dark sky is needed, which is problematic if living in the City, but all our students are encouraged (when and if it is safe to do so) to look up and observe the wonders of our Universe.
