Jemima Parker | Alumna Spotlight: Neuroscience and Global Adventures
Meet Jemima Parker, one of our amazing alumnae! From studying A-level Biology at Leicester High to earning a degree in Neuroscience and taking on adventurous travels in Vietnam, Jemima’s story is all about a love for science, discovery, and making the most of every opportunity.
What motivated you to pursue your chosen subject?
My A-level biology studies definitely played a role in my decision to pursue Neuroscience as a degree. Learning the basics about neurons and synaptic connections sparked my fascination with how the brain functions. I knew that Neuroscience contributes massively to medical advances in both neurological and mental health conditions, leading me to pursue my interest in such a growing scientific and medical area.
How did your time at Leicester High School for Girls prepare you for university and your degree studies?
Leicester High helped me to gain a positive work ethic and critical thinking skills, as well as giving me discipline for meeting lots of work deadlines (which although I probably disliked at school) definitely gave me the confidence I needed to keep on top of the heavy workloads at uni! This was important so that I was still able to have a work-life balance and have fun too!
Were there any particular teachers or lessons at Leicester High that inspired your academic journey?
Both Mrs Rai and Miss Tyler inspired me to pursue biology due to their enthusiasm for science and fun lessons! I always enjoyed the biology practicals (especially dissections) and I was able to transfer the skills I learned during these lessons to university, where I dissected various brains! 🧠😄
Your current bike tour in Vietnam is such an adventurous undertaking! What has been the most memorable moment of your bike tour so far, and why?
There have been so many incredible moments, including the endless breathtaking views and fun evenings embracing the Vietnamese culture and food, but one particular moment that stands out is riding to a viewpoint where we could see the border of China! I also had a great time making friends with my amazing moped driver, as well as many other travellers from all over the world! I would recommend the experience to anyone who visits Vietnam - a truly unforgettable time!
Most memorable moment at Leicester High School for Girls?
It is hard to name just one, but definitely the many school trips, taking part in school productions, sports days and the sense of success and relief following final exams are definitely moments I won’t forget!
How did attending a Girls' School help you achieve success?
Being at a girls’ school allowed me to really focus on my academics and interests without certain distractions and gender biases. As a woman, it empowered me to embrace leadership opportunities and build a sense of confidence in myself and my abilities, particularly in traditionally male-dominated subjects like STEM.
Future Aspirations: Now that you've completed your degree and are experiencing life on the road, what are your plans for the future?
While I am not 100% sure what I want to do in the future, after my travels I hope to continue exploring some sort of scientific study, possibly combining it with travel and research. After working hard for my degree, I am enjoying taking time out to explore the world before starting my career and I hope to take the skills and experiences I have gained from my travels into my future profession, whatever that may be!
Is there any message you'd like to share with the Leicester High community, especially the current students, about following their passions?
My message to current students would be: Follow your passions, take risks, and don’t be afraid to fail along the way. Each experience, good or bad, teaches you something valuable. Also, embrace the unique opportunities that attending Leicester High gives you - you are surrounded by an amazing network of supportive and like-minded people. Make the most of school, because believe it or not, you will probably miss it when you leave and enter the real world!
