Maths students attend the Maths in Action conference
Leicester High School for Girls' Year 12 and 13 Maths students recently attended the Maths in Action conference at Warwick University.
Warwick University is known for having the No. 4 ranked mathematics department in the UK. The conference consisted of a series of mini lectures and featured a lineup of expert speakers:
- Calina Durbac discussed "Promoting Cooperation in Selfish Populations" and discussed the Evolutionary Game Theory.
- Simon Singh tackled the enduring mystery of "Fermat’s Last Theorem," a problem that has intrigued mathematicians for centuries.
- Colin Wright explored the Moebius Strip, uncovering hidden structures and patterns within it.
- Sophie Maclean demonstrated the connection between music and mathematics, engaging students with an interactive presentation.
- Tom Crawford provided insight into "Pokémaths – the maths behind the video game," revealing the mathematical principles behind the popular Pokémon video game series.
Matthew Pinnick, Head of Maths at Leicester High School for Girls, emphasised the real-world applications of mathematics, stating, "Maths goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. Events like the Maths in Action conference at Warwick University expose our students to practical applications beyond the standard curriculum."
