Pastoral

Wellbeing Officer, Mrs Wright

At Leicester High School for Girls, pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We aim to create a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment where every girl feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. Our approach to pastoral care extends across all year groups, from Pre-School to Sixth Form, ensuring that all girls are well-known, supported, and guided throughout their time with us.

Pre-School and Junior Pastoral Care

Each girl is supported by her class teacher, who understands her individual needs and provides a safe, nurturing environment. This is strengthened by our Pastoral Leads, who oversee the well-being of pupils in EYFS and Years 1-5, adding an extra layer of care.

A Culture of Care
Our Junior School is a close-knit community where staff know every girl individually. We develop confidence, resilience, and independence in a friendly, inclusive setting, encouraging girls to share concerns with teachers and feel valued.

Partnership with Parents
We work closely with parents to support each girl’s development. Regular communication keeps parents informed and involved, ensuring a collaborative approach to her well-being.

Pre-School and Junior Before and After School Care

We understand that many parents have commitments beyond the school day. To support families, we offer a comprehensive Before and After School Care programme for Junior Department girls (Foundation to Year 5).

  • Before School Care: 7.30am–8.15am.
  • After School Care: 3.15pm–6.00pm.
  • Clubs & Activities: For Years 1–5, offering art, crafts, games, cooking, and more.

Staffed by qualified specialists and Sixth Formers, the programme includes engaging activities and homework support in the Library and Computer Suite. Sessions take place in the Junior Hall, with playground access on sunny days.

Each girl is supported by her class teacher, with additional guidance from dedicated Pastoral Leads for EYFS and Years 1–5. The 2023/2024 charge is £3.60 per 30 minutes.

Senior School Pastoral Care

In the Senior School, pastoral care is delivered through a structured and comprehensive support system designed to meet the needs of every student.

Key Components of Pastoral Care

  • Tutor Groups: Each girl is assigned to a tutor group and supported by her Form Tutor, who provides day-to-day guidance.
  • Head of Year: For additional support, the Head of Year is available to assist with academic or personal matters.
  • Wellbeing Officer: The school has a full-time, experienced Wellbeing Officer who plays a vital role in supporting students’ welfare. With expertise in educational policies, child development, safeguarding, and welfare issues, they offer tailored assistance to girls who may need extra care and guidance.
  • SEND Co-ordinator: For those requiring further academic or personal support, the SEND Co-ordinator provides specialist assistance, ensuring access to the resources and support needed to succeed.

This multi-layered approach ensures that all students feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout their Senior School journey.

PSHE: Building Empathy and Global Awareness

We are committed to developing empathy, critical thinking, and global awareness through our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education) programme.

Our PSHE lessons encourage students to explore important topics such as:

  • Understanding bias and privilege.
  • Addressing racism and discrimination.
  • Examining human rights across the globe.

These sessions provide a safe and inclusive space for discussion, helping students develop empathy and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Houses

The House system is a key part of life at Leicester High, fostering belonging, collaboration, and team spirit. Pupils and staff join one of three Houses: Beaumanor, Bradgate, or Charnwood, named after local landmarks.

Each House is led by a Sixth Form House Captain who organises events and motivates their team. Pupils earn points through events like Sports Day, House Netball, and Music competitions, as well as for positive actions reflecting School values.

The House Cup is awarded annually to the top House, with individual contributions recognised through Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. The system helps every girl build confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills.

The pastoral care at Leicester High is exceptional. My daughter has thrived in the nurturing and supportive environment the school provides. Her confidence has grown, and she feels valued and understood every day. The staff genuinely care about each child, and it shows in everything they do. We couldn't be happier with the care and attention she receives
