Interview with Our Health and Wellbeing Officer

We recently sat down with Joanne Wright, our dedicated Health & Wellbeing Officer, to learn more about her role and the essential support she provides to our students.

Read on to discover more about Joanne’s role, her daily routine, and her top tips for developing mental health and wellbeing at school.

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself, what you do?

I’m Joanne Wright, the Health & Wellbeing Officer here at Leicester High School. Before joining LHS, I worked in SEND departments and on a CAMHS unit, so supporting young people with a wide range of needs has always been my passion. At LHS, my role is all about helping our students thrive, whether that’s through emotional, physical, social, medical, or mental health support. I’m also proud to be part of the Pastoral and Safeguarding Team.

As a trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA), I run weekly sessions for students in both the Junior and Senior Schools, helping them with their emotional literacy needs. I work closely with parents and outside professionals to ensure every student gets the right support.

You’ll usually find me in the Wellbeing Office, where my door is always open for a chat. Students are welcome to drop by anytime, and during breaks and lunch, the office becomes a space to relax, play games, and take a breather. I’m here for the staff too, offering support whenever needed.

  2. What is your daily routine?

No two days are ever the same I just have to be reactive to the students needs on a daily basis.

  3. What is your favourite part about the work you do?

Working with the students in School and being able to support them to overcome any wellbeing struggles they are experiencing.

  4. What are your top tips for improving pupils' mental health in schools?

Healthy diet, sleep and having a happy schoolwork/ life balance. Being able to talk about how you are feeling.

  5. What is a book that you would recommend to a pupil?

Foundation/ Juniors- Find Your Happy & My Body Sends A Signal
Senior - You Are Awesome    Being You- Poems of Positivity

  6. What do you like most about LHS?

The nurturing community environment that is LHS and the students & staff that create that community.

  7. What is the School's approach to supporting pupils with their mental health and wellbeing?

At Leicester High School, we take mental health and wellbeing seriously, and creating the role of Health and Wellbeing Officer is one of the ways we show this commitment. As part of my role, I’ve set up the Wellbeing Office, which serves as a safe and welcoming space where students can come whenever they need support. Our strong Pastoral Team works closely with students to understand and meet their individual needs, and we often guide families toward additional professional help when needed. Our goal is simple: to help every student reach their full potential while making sure their wellbeing is always a priority.
