Introducing Jane Carroll – Chair of Governors at Leicester High School for Girls

At the heart of every great school is strong leadership, and at Leicester High School for Girls, that leadership extends beyond the classroom. Meet Jane Carroll, our Chair of Governors—a passionate advocate for girls’ education, a leader with decades of experience, and a true champion of everything that defines LHS.
What attracted you to becoming a governor at a top girls’ school like Leicester High School for Girls?
I've always been passionate about girls’ education because I’ve seen first-hand the impact it can have. In a girls-only environment, students are free to be themselves, develop confidence, and explore opportunities without limitations. I believe that when girls are given the right environment and encouragement, they excel—academically, personally, and as future leaders.
I've had a long-standing connection with Leicester High through my work with the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA), so when the opportunity to become a governor came up, it felt like the perfect way to give back. I was delighted to join the team.
Can you tell us a little about your career journey and how it has shaped your approach to leadership?
My leadership journey began at my girls’ school and through Girl Guiding, where I progressed from Brownie to adult leader, running two Guide groups in my twenties. Those experiences taught me how to lead, listen, and think on my feet—especially with 20 excited Guides talking at once!
Since then, I’ve worked in Higher, Adult, state, and independent education, supporting Heads, Governors, and staff while travelling the UK and internationally.
I’ve been fortunate to learn from inspiring leaders who shaped my approach—built on integrity, transparency, and strong relationships. Trust and resilience are key, and of course, a good sense of humour always helps!
What do you enjoy most about being Chair of Governors?
Without a doubt, the best part is spending time in school and seeing the impact of our decisions first-hand. I love attending events, chatting with students, and being part of the community. Being a governor is all about supporting the pupils and helping create the best experience possible for them.
How do you see the role of the governing body in shaping the future of the School?
We play a key role in securing the future of the school, from appointing the next Head to making sure the school is financially secure. We also challenge and support the leadership team to ensure the best possible education for our pupils. But beyond that, we also need to think ahead. Schools are evolving, and as governors, we have to be forward-thinking—exploring innovative ways to enhance learning, wellbeing, and future opportunities for our girls. A strong governing body brings together a mix of skills and expertise, all working towards the same goal—helping the school thrive.
Why do you believe a girls’ education is important?
Girls’ schools give girls the space to be themselves, free from stereotypes, and take on leadership roles across school life.
Everything—from the curriculum to the sports field—is designed for them, creating a supportive environment where they can take risks, learn, and build confidence. Girls’ schools shape strong, capable young women, ready for the future.
I’ve seen this first-hand. A Sixth Form student once doubted whether engineering was for her, unsure about entering a male-dominated field. But at her girls’ school, she had the freedom to explore STEM without stereotypes. Encouraged by her teachers, she thrived in physics and maths, took on leadership roles in science projects, and gained the confidence to pursue her passion. By Sixth Form, she was set on becoming an engineer—and went on to study mechanical engineering at university. A perfect example of how girls’ schools empower young women to break barriers and follow their ambitions.
Research from the Girls’ Schools Association shows GSA pupils are more likely to study STEM subjects and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths—just one example of how girls’ schools break barriers and create opportunities.
What makes Leicester High School for Girls stand out?
Leicester High is a close-knit, supportive community where every girl is known and encouraged to achieve her best. The school has a calm, focused atmosphere, and the pupils are incredibly respectful—not just to staff but to each other. They share a fantastic work ethic.
It’s also a place full of opportunity. Whether it’s performing on stage, playing in a sports team, leading the school council, or exploring a new passion, every girl is encouraged to step forward with confidence.
What are your hopes for the School over the next five years?
I’d love to see Leicester High continue to be a part of the local community—not just known for its excellent education but as a place where people come together. Strengthening links with other schools, opening our doors for community events, and creating new opportunities for pupils will all be key.
It’s more important than ever to highlight the unique benefits of an all-girls education. We need to be forward-thinking—embracing innovative teaching methods, expanding partnerships with businesses, and equipping our pupils with the skills they need for the future. Whether through new leadership programs, hands-on STEM initiatives, or fresh approaches to personal development, Leicester High will continue to evolve while staying true to what makes it special: a supportive, inspiring place where girls thrive.
What message would you like to share with parents considering the School for their daughters?
Come and see us! As you walk up the driveway, you’ll see how happy our girls are. The school is not just beautiful on the outside but inside too—there’s a real sense of calm, purpose, and support that makes it a fantastic environment for learning.
Most importantly, this is where your daughter will be known as an individual, encouraged to grow in confidence, and supported every step of the way. Whether she loves science, languages, music, sport, or something entirely different, she’ll have endless opportunities to explore her passions and discover what excites her, and most importantly – have fun along the way.
