Leicester High School for Girls Inspires Students with Scenic Artist

Students from Years 7-13 at Leicester High School for Girls were treated to an inspiring talk from Amelia Thomson, a talented freelance scenic artist, who shared her journey and career insights with the students.

Amelia, who studied GCSE and A Level Art before pursuing Theatre Studies at Bath Spa University, spoke passionately about her role in turning creative visions into a reality.

Amelia’s work spans a variety of media, with a special focus on theatre, TV, and film. One of her most notable projects was her involvement in the production of the hit TV series Masters of the Air, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, where she painted a staggering 300 bombs as part of the set design.

Amelia spoke about the challenges of her job, from finding work as a freelancer to meeting deadlines and working long hours. Despite these challenges, she highlighted the satisfaction of her role, the variety of her work, and the positive energy from those around her.

When asked about the fate of the stunning sets and panto cloths she has helped create, Amelia shared that many items are stored for future productions, sent to theatre companies around the world, or, unfortunately, discarded. Mrs. Rose, Head of Drama at the school, cheekily suggested that perhaps the Drama Department could take some cast-offs for future projects.

Amelia’s message to the students was clear: success in the arts requires dedication, resilience, and a willingness to adapt to new opportunities. She encouraged the girls to follow their passions, no matter how challenging the path might be. The students left the session feeling motivated and inspired, with a renewed sense of excitement about the endless possibilities in the creative industries.

Leicester High School for Girls continues to provide enriching opportunities for students to explore different career paths and gain insights from professionals across various fields, helping them to make informed choices about their future.
