Leicester High School for Girls Introduces the Curie Society with Inaugural Event
Leicester High School for Girls (LHS) is pleased to announce the launch of its academic society, the Curie Society, which provides a platform for students to explore various academic disciplines and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.
The society celebrated its inaugural event with two distinguished guest speakers from Leicester University: Professor George Lewis and Dr. Zulfa Feghali.
Professor George Lewis, the former Head of the School of History, Politics, and International Relations at Leicester University, delivered an insightful lecture on the importance of studying history as a means to reflect on one's role as a citizen and draw lessons from the past. His expertise lies in modern US history, with a specialisation in issues of race and racism.
Dr. Zulfa Feghali, an Associate Professor of American Literature at Leicester University, shared her perspectives on how the study of literature can contribute to becoming a more informed and engaged citizen. Dr. Feghali specialises in US and Canadian literature and culture.
The event also featured a Q&A session and discussions with Professor Lewis and Dr. Feghali, providing students with an opportunity to actively engage with the topics discussed.
Rani T, a member of the Curie Society, delivered a vote of thanks to the guest speakers. Shivani R and Hafsah H, both active members of the society, presented small tokens of appreciation to Professor Lewis and Dr. Feghali.
Academic Mentor, Andy McMurray said, “The Curie Society, named after the esteemed scientist Marie Curie, aims to encourage intellectual curiosity and critical thinking amongst LHS students. It was a fantastic first session and we extend our thanks to the two speakers. We are looking forward to future activities of the Curie Society.”
