Leicester High School for Girls Triumphs Again at IET Faraday Challenge

Leicester High School for Girls is celebrating another engineering success, as one of its Year 8 teams was crowned winner of the Regional Heat of the prestigious IET Faraday Challenge, held at Catmose College in Oakham.

The challenge, organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), invites teams of six Year 8 pupils from across the country to tackle a real-world engineering problem. This year’s brief tasked students with designing a sustainable, battery-powered device to support either an older or younger person in their daily life.

Competing against six other schools, both of Leicester High’s teams impressed with their creativity and problem-solving. One team emerged victorious with a thoughtful and innovative design: a motorised device to assist toddlers with taking their first steps. Judges praised the team not only for their clever concept, but also for their excellent teamwork and clear, confident presentation.

This marks the second consecutive year that Leicester High has won the Regional Heat. Last year, the school placed in the top ten nationally, narrowly missing out on the National Finals. With this year’s win, the team now has the opportunity to progress to the national stage of the competition.

Alan Whelpdale, Headmaster at Leicester High School for Girls, said:
“We are incredibly proud of both teams for their ingenuity, teamwork and professionalism. Their success reflects the strength of STEM education at the School and the enthusiasm our girls have for tackling real-world challenges.”

The School community is delighted with the result and looks forward to seeing how far the team can go in the next stage of the competition.
