LHS Public Speaking Competition 2023
On Wednesday 15th March the gym was abuzz with nervous, excited girls making final preparations for the English Department’s annual Public Speaking Competition. All students in Years 6-10 wrote and delivered a persuasive or argumentative speech on a topic of their choice in class rounds; the winners of the class rounds then went through to represent their forms in the final.
The girls spoke with insight and passion on topics as diverse as: ’Should homework be banned for primary school students?’; ‘Why do we need gender equality?’ ; ‘Are the Royal family good role models?’; ‘Should the media give more attention to women in sports?’; ‘Should museums return colonial artefacts?’; ‘Does the prison system make better people?’; ‘Is TikTok poisoning society?’ and ‘Should sanitary products be free for everyone?’
We were thrilled that Miss Wassell and Mrs Rees returned to LHS to act as adjudicators. Their job was a tough one as the standards were so high across all year groups. However, after much discussion, the following prizes were awarded:
Best Vote of Thanks: Aashna S (7A)
Best Chairperson: Amy C (9E)
Best Junior Team (Years 6,7,8) 8D Zahra A, Sarah R and Aliya M
Best Senior Team (9 and 10) 10KP Anna-Maria R, Isabelle H and Jiya R.
Best overall speaker (all years) Kawsar N (6W)
All girls who took part in the finals receive an Excellence Book nomination. Winners on the day also received chocolate and certificates. Kawsar (pictured here with Miss Wassell and Mrs Rees) was awarded the LHS Public Speaking Plate.
Congratulations to all competitors!
