The Options Process 

At Leicester High School our aim is to provide a broad education while permitting a large measure of individual flexibility. We do our best to provide a 'pooling system' to suit all students, where you choose subjects from 'pools' of subjects which have been grouped together in order to ensure they work for your timetable. 

Core Subjects 

Most students will study either 9 or 10 GCSEs. Remember that quality is more important than quantity.

All students study the following subjects:

• English language, 
• English literature, 
• Mathematics, 
• Sciences (double award or three separate sciences), 

You will also have lessons in non-examination courses in Physical Education and Personal, Social, Health, and Citizenship Education (PSHCE).  

Option Subjects 

You will then choose four other subjects alongside these compulsory areas from the pools.

 

 

How Should I Make My Choices?

All subjects require different skills, alongside the need to plan work carefully and research topics independently, as well as meet agreed deadlines.

Organisation will be vital throughout each year of the two-year GCSE course, as most subjects will only be assessed by public examinations at the end of the two years.

You will need to consider your future plans for A Levels and University as some courses will require you to have a relevant GCSE. 

Also, consider which subjects you enjoy and which are interesting and challenging to you. Review where you currently get your best grades and think about subjects which require similar skills.

When Do I Make My Choices? 

We ask for current students to make their initial choice early in Spring Term as this helps to create the Pools. 

New students will need to make their choices as early as possible to their admissions process.
