Sixth Formers Lead Science Masterclass for Junior School Pupils

Sixth Form students at Leicester High School for Girls have delivered their first Science Masterclass to Year 5 pupils, focusing on the Science of Music.

This marks the beginning of their involvement in a programme developed in partnership with the Royal Institute, designed to enhance leadership and communication skills while inspiring younger students in STEM subjects.

The initiative allows Sixth Formers to take an active role in education by planning and delivering engaging, hands-on workshops using Royal Institute resources alongside their own ideas. In their first session, the Year 5 pupils learnt about how sound is produced, how music affects our brain and how we hear sound. They were introduced to the hippocampus and amygdala—the parts of the brain responsible for memory and emotion—through interactive activities that made complex biology accessible and engaging for younger pupils.

“This opportunity not only allows our Sixth Formers to develop key skills in leadership and communication but also fosters a passion for STEM among our younger students,” said Andrew McMurray, Head of Science at Leicester High School for Girls.

The programme is part of the school’s commitment to academic excellence and personal development, ensuring students are equipped with the confidence and skills to inspire the next generation of learners
