Triumphant Public Speaking Contest
Leicester High School for Girls recently hosted their annual Public Speaking Competition, where students showcased their eloquence and critical thinking skills. For the first time since the competition began in 2017, the event was attended by parents who witnessed the impressive performances.
The competition, aimed at developing public speaking skills among students, saw Kawsar (Year 7) clinching the coveted title for the second year in a row, with her compelling speech titled "Single Sex Education is Not Overrated." Kawsar's insightful analysis and engaging delivery captivated the audience and impressed the adjudicators, previous LHS Teacher of English, Mrs. Hilary Rees, and Head of Drama, Mrs. Jo Rose.
The competition, chaired by Head of English, Mrs. Penney, featured impassioned speeches from both junior and senior teams. Highlights from the junior category included Rose's discourse on "Too Much Emphasis Placed Upon Winning", Aribah's compelling argument on "America Has Done More Harm Than Good," and Aashna's thought-provoking speech asserting that "Virtual Reality Will Never Replace Our Reality." Kerryn raised the question, "Is Our Obsession With Social Media Dangerous?" Notably, Kawsar's winning speech resonated deeply with the audience, advocating for the merits of single-sex education.
In the senior category, Zara's persuasive speech on "Organ Donation Should Be Compulsory" and Nicole's insightful analysis on "The Media’s Presentation of True Crime Is More Harmful Than Beneficial" stood out among the impressive lineup of topics. Amreen delved into the topic of whether "Humans Should Always Be Competing." Additionally, Sophia challenged perspectives by questioning, "Is It Too Expensive To Be A Woman in 2024?"
Additionally, Mirabelle's captivating interval speech on "We Should End Fast Fashion" provided entertaining respite while the adjudicators deliberated.
"We are immensely proud of our students for their outstanding performances in the Public Speaking Competition," remarked Mrs. Penney, Chair of the event. "Their eloquence, critical thinking, and delivery were truly commendable. The standard just gets better year on year. We feel certain our students will go out into the world with the confidence to use their voices."
Leicester High School for Girls remains committed to nurturing the communication and critical thinking skills of its students, preparing them to excel in all facets of life.
